Mission & Guiding Principles

Mission Statement

Our mission as part of the Department of English and the Academic Support Center is to enrich the educational experience of Pitt undergraduate and graduate students through one-on-one support in various aspects of the writing process from the planning stages to final edits.  Being able to express yourself in writing is important to your life both inside and outside of college. Our goal is to help you become a more confident and effective writer.

We can teach you how to better understand your own writing process, how to work on your own writing, how to understand writing assignments, and how to proofread, for example. We also offer regular workshops on creative writing through our Writers Café events.

You are welcome to come to the Writing Center at any time: at the beginning of the process, when you have just received an assignment; after you have a draft or part of a draft pulled together; after you have received feedback from your teacher or your peers in class and you want to start revising; and as you are finishing up a draft and want some help in learning how to edit and proofread your own work. It is our hope that we can help you learn more about writing, and yourself as a writer, whether you come once a term or every week.

Guiding Principles
